Playing the Minnesota Golden Gophers…what to eat? (part 3)…SPAM®

SPAM® is made in Austin, Minnesota (by the Hormel Company), and thus, I feel a likely candidate for inclusion in a game-themed meal for the USC vs. Minnesota game.  With this in mind, I did a little research about this food item that I used to eat when I was growing up..but really haven’t eaten for years now!

Currently SPAM is most popular in the states of Alaska and Hawaii. It is also popular in many other countries. Whenever the economy takes a downturn, sales of SPAM increase. (According to: http://www.minnesota-visitor.com/spam-recipes.html.)

SPAM® debuted in 1937.  On SPAM.com, you can find facts and trivia about this canned, processed pork that America has enjoyed for 74 years, such as:

  • What is it made of? Just a few simple ingredients they say: Pork with ham, salt, water, potato starch, and sodium nitrate (to maintain the pink color) and some spices.
  • Pork with ham?  What does that mean?  According to SPAM.com, “Ham and pork are different cuts of meat. The ham is technically taken from the upper rear leg of the hog, while pork can describe meat from several delicious cuts.”
  • What does SPAM mean?  An actor from New York coined the name in 1936, winning the naming contest that paid $100.  The rumor is that the word SPAM blends the words “spiced” and “ham,” but at SPAM.com, they indicate the winning entry was SPAM…no more than that…just SPAM..there is no other insight or confirmation of its meaning.
  • Most popular way to cook it: Fried and then eaten in a sandwich (that is how I remember eating it as kid).
  • Museum ?  Yes, there is a SPAM Museum in Austin, Minnesota!  Has anyone visited?

The SPAM website includes games and music.  I found the song, “Pam Don’t Take My SPAM®” particularly entertaining, as well as a Monty Python’s SPAMALOT™ game (replete with music).

The site also features a plethora of recipes.

I love the Monty Python SPAM skit from 1970… and from that skit I suggest we take one of those options to serve at pre-game!  Egg, bacon, SPAM, and sausage…perhaps!

Fight on!

Just don’t eat the spam cold, as someone I know had it served to him as a kid… 🙂
